In France
Bill, a young British private, is in northern France when the German offensive begins on May 10, 1940. As the front gives way, his war becomes a struggle to survive the chaos of the campaign and the retreat toward the Channel.
In London
Winston Churchill takes office on the very day the German offensive begins. As the news from France grows darker, he faces voices in his own War Cabinet urging a negotiated peace — and must decide whether Britain will fight on alone.
The History
On May 10, 1940, Germany invaded the Low Countries and France, and Churchill became Prime Minister. Within weeks the British army was trapped against the coast, and the evacuation from Dunkirk — remembered as a miracle — began as a catastrophe. The novel follows those weeks from both sides of the Channel.
